Do you need a guide in Zion?

Most Zion Canyon highlights are self-guided: the shuttle, Pa’rus, Riverside Walk, Emerald Pools, and the Narrows bottom-up day hike need no guide. A guide adds the most value for technical canyoneering, rock climbing, first-time Narrows wading gear and pacing, and photography or e-bike outings where local timing matters.

Types of guided trips around Zion

  • Canyoneering and climbing courses. Run by guide services in Springdale under park or BLM permits. Many beginner routes are outside the park on public land.
  • Guided hikes. Useful for families and first-timers who want context on geology and history.
  • E-bike tours and rentals. Bikes are allowed on the Scenic Drive and the Pa’rus Trail. See our e-bike guide.
  • Narrows outfitters. Rent canyoneering shoes, neoprene socks, and dry suits in cold months. See the Narrows kit.
  • Scenic and photography tours. Often combine the east side, the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway, and sunset overlooks.

Before you book anything

  • A tour does not replace a required permit. Angels Landing and Narrows top-down hikes need NPS permits. See the permit guide.
  • Park entry is separate. Confirm fees on the NPS fees page.
  • Ask the operator what permit or authorization they hold for the area they use.
  • Read the cancellation policy for flash-flood and heat closures. Summer storms close slot canyons on short notice.
  • Large vehicles have limits in the Zion–Mount Carmel tunnel: NPS large vehicles page.
